A couple of news story in the lawyer about movement from and between firms illustrates neatly the way the press legal reports these things as mini soap opera. The impact of defections (lateral hiring of lawyers between one firm and another) is also shown to impact on economies of scope in those firms (the ability to provide a range of services within one organisation to clients), with Hammond’s reportedly having to develop referral arrangements as an alternative to doing to work in house. Referral arrangements may protect the firm against the risk of their clients shopping around for the services they do not provide and tkaing all their woerk elsewhere when they find someon they like. The second story was advertised by an email saying, What Maurice and Mike did next. It illustrates some of the commercial and cultural dynamics at work when partners with high worth (human capital as some of the academics refer to it) look for the best place for them to earn their corn….
